Un réveil à 4 h du matin et un départ en bus à 4:40 pour Ollantaytambo. Voyage de 3h avec petite halte Lama entre temps et nous voila devant le train de Perurail direction Machu Picchu ! De magnifiques paysages ont accompagnés ce voyage de 2h. Arrivée à Agua Calientes à 9:45.
De là 1h20 de marche le long de la voix ferrée (les trains sont réservés aux locaux) et des montagnes. Une végétation à perte de vue, des papillons de toutes les tailles et couleurs et des oiseaux qui chantent à tue-tête, tout simplement magnifique !
Ce fut une autre histoire en arrivant à l’endroit où je suis censée vivre les 6 prochains mois…
An alarm clock at 4 am and a bus departure at 4:40 am for Ollantaytambo. Trip of 3 hours with small stop Lama in the meantime and here we are in front of the train from Perurail to Machu Picchu! Beautiful landscapes accompanied this 2-hour trip. Arrival at Agua Calientes at 9:45.
From there 1h20 walk along the railway voice (trains are reserved for locals) and mountains. Vegetation as far as the eye can see, butterflies of all sizes and colors and birds singing loudly, simply magnificent!
It was a different story when I arrived at the place where I am supposed to live for the next 6 months…
Découverte de Mandor / Discovery of Mandor
En arrivant à Mandor, qui est une propriété d’environ 248 hectares, je me suis sérieusement demandée: ” Qu’est-ce que je fous ici ?”. Question renforcée par la visite des lieux de vie. Ma première réaction fût : Croisement entre le Moyen-Âge et une maison dans un arbre.
Non pas que je m’attendais à un hôtel 4 étoiles, mais les photos de présentation ne montrait que la face visible pour les clients, et non le véritable logis de la famille et des employés. De ce coté là, je n’ai pas à me plaindre, ma chambre, bien que précaire, est situé dans le parc, loin de l’agitation. Les employés du parc (cuisinière et jardiniers) ont une chambre relativement miteuse accolée … à l’atelier. Donc beaucoup de bruits pendant la journée et le soir.
La chambre qui m’a été attribuée est assez grande mais a également des trous partout, permettant un accès libre à tout type d’insectes, pour mon plus grand bonheur. Et bien entendu, salle de bains partagée et ouverte (sans vitre dans les fenêtres). L’installation aura été compliquée et l’acclimatation encore plus.
Après une très bref visite des lieux, une petite introduction à mon nouveau travail (du moins en partie) et nettoyage intensif de la chambre. Pas le temps de visité le parc.
Le repas du soir s’est passé sans un mot devant une télénovela à laquelle je ne comprenais rien, bref très solitaire.
Arriving in Mandor, which is a property of about 248 hectares, I seriously wondered: “What am I doing here?”. Question reinforced by the visit of the places of life. My first reaction was: Cross between the Middle Ages and a house in a tree.
Not that I expected a 4-star hotel, but the presentation photos only showed the visible face for the guests, not the real home of the family and employees. On this side, I do not have to complain, my room, although precarious, is located in the park, far from the hustle and bustle. The park employees (cook and gardeners) have a relatively seedy room adjoining … at the workshop. So a lot of noise during the day and in the evening.
The room assigned to me is quite large but also has holes everywhere, allowing free access to all types of insects, to my delight. And of course, shared and open bathroom (without glass in the windows). The installation will have been complicated and the acclimatization even more.
After a very brief tour of the premises, a small introduction to my new job (at least in part) and intensive cleaning of the room. No time to visit the park.
The evening meal passed without a word in front of a telenovela to which I understood nothing, in short very lonely.

Le silence est de mise: La cuisinière et le jardinier ne me parlent pas. Après quelques explications supplémentaires sur mon rôle ici: Tenir la réception, aider au restaurant et trouver des idées pour améliorer l’aspect et la visibilité de l’hôtel et du parc, j’ai commencé à douter pas mal de mon utilité ici. Le dernier volontaire avait construit un dispensaire d’eau, une autre avait répertorié 80% des plantes présentes dans le parc… Bref la barre est assez haute.
Relativement peu de clients ce jour là et, malheureusement peu de conversation avec les gens d’ici aussi. Vers 17h, E. m’a emmener visiter le parc, constitué d’un jardin botanique, suivi d’une foret vierge, le tout menant à la fameuse cascade de Mandor.
Avec plus de 300 sortes d’orchidées, des oiseaux rares, des plantes avec des feuilles plus grandes que moi. Et la cascade, une beauté impressionnante !
Le soir : télénovela ! Alors si j’ai bien compris, il s’agit d’un chirurgien autiste super intelligent et il y a un problème avec une fille qui joue super mal… Mais j’ai pas compris plus …
Silence is in order: The cook and the gardener do not talk to me. After some more explanations about my role here: Holding the reception, helping at the restaurant and coming up with ideas to improve the look and visibility of the hotel and park, I began to doubt quite a bit about my usefulness here. The last volunteer had built a water dispensary, another had listed 80% of the plants present in the park… In short, the bar is quite high.
Relatively few customers that day and, unfortunately, little conversation with people here as well. Around 5pm, E.m to visit the park, consisting of a botanical garden, followed by a virgin forest, all leading to the famous Mandor waterfall.
With more than 300 kinds of orchids, rare birds, plants with leaves larger than me. And the waterfall, an impressive beauty!
In the evening: telenovela! So if I understand correctly, this is a super smart autistic surgeon and there is a problem with a girl who plays super badly… But I didn’t understand more…

Sensiblement comme hier, toujours pas très à l’aise avec la famille ou les employés. Pas beaucoup de clients. J’ai fais une petite liste de projets / idées pour ici, à voir ce qui est faisable.
La nourriture est bonne, mais c’est toujours la même chose: soupe avec légumes, viande et patate, puis plat chaud avec légumes, viande et patates. Et ce matin, midi, et soir.
Le chirurgien autiste a une copine (je crois) …
Noticeably like yesterday, still not very comfortable with family or employees. Not many customers. I’ve made a small list of projects/ideas for here, to see what’s doable.
The food is good, but it’s always the same thing: soup with vegetables, meat and potato, then hot dish with vegetables, meat and potatoes. And this morning, noon, and evening.
The autistic surgeon has a girlfriend (I think) …

Fanny est arrivée ! Après une journée quelque peu solitaire, la nouvelle volontaire française est arrivée ! Ça fait de bien d’avoir quelqu’un à qui parler.
Elle non plus ne comprend pas le problème du chirurgien…

Ana arrive ! Nouvelle volontaire d’Espagne. Elle parle vraiment vite et avec un accent très différent d’ici, un peu dur à comprendre. Avec Fanny, on prévoir d’aller au Machupicchu ensemble pendant nos jours libres, Ana aimerait y aller aussi, mais E. ne veut pas qu’on parte toutes les 3 en même temps…
Fanny has arrived! After a somewhat lonely day, the new French volunteer has arrived! It feels good to have someone to talk to.
She also does not understand the problem of the surgeon…
Nothing new, we slowly establish a routine …
Ana is arriving! New volunteer from Spain. She speaks really fast and with a very different accent from here, a little hard to understand. With Fanny, we plan to go to Machu Picchu together during our free days, Ana would like to go too, but E. does not want us to leave all 3 at the same time…
19, 20 & 21.02
Un peu hâte de finir la semaine, comme on doit attendre Ana pour partir, ça fait un peu long, mais ça vaudra le coup !
On a finit la peinture et commencer avec la construction des étagères.
On continue les baignades le matin (Ana et E. n’ont pas osé entrer dans l’eau).
Nous avons également perdu un fier combattant: le PC de Fanny nous a quitté malgré les nombreuses tentatives de sauvetage de personnes clairement pas techniciennes … Rest in Peace…
A little haste to finish the week, as we have to wait for Ana to leave, it’s a little long, but it will be worth it!
We finished the painting and started with the construction of the shelves.
We continue the swims in the morning (Ana and E. did not dare to enter the water).
We also lost a proud fighter: Fanny’s PC left us despite the many attempts to rescue people clearly not technicians … Rest in Peace…
